Questions about No More Ply (NMP)
What is NMP made of?
NMP is a cement fibre board.
How many boards will 1 tube of Mega Strength adhesive do?
1 tube should be sufficient for between 5 and 8 boards but obviously the usage is very much dependant on the installer.
How many NMP screws will I need to use per board?
On a 6mm board you will need to use eight 25mm screws and on a 9mm board you will need to use nine 38mm screws.
How close to the edge of the NMP board can I put my screws?
You can place NMP screws up to 50mm/2 inches from the edge of the NMP boards. If you need to screw the board closer than this, please use a pilot drill.
Bear in mind it is the Mega Strength adhesive which holds the boards in place.
How much does one 6mm NMP board weigh?
The 6mm board weighs 6kg.
How much does one 9mm NMP board weigh?
The 9mm board weighs 11kg.
Can I use the 6mm NMP board on walls?
Yes, 6mm NMP is suitable for ALL over boarding (floors and walls). Remember when fixing 6mm NMP on to studwork to make sure your studs are at 400 centres. If the centres are wider than this you should use a 9mm or 12mm board for extra rigidity.
What can I use 9mm NMP for?
The 9mm board is usually used where extra rigidity is required, usually for going straight on to studwork instead of something such as plasterboard.
What is the thermal insulative properties of NMP?
The thermal insulative property of NMP has a U value of 0.42.
How does NMP compare thermally with insulation board?
NMP is approximately half as good as the equivalent thickness of insulation board.
Will NMP reduce sound?
It will reduce reverberating such as the noise of someone speaking but it will not decrease impact noise such as footsteps. To reduce impact noise we recommend the Beava Quiet Floor product.
Which way up do I fit NMP boards?
NMP should be fitted with the logo showing.
Can I plaster onto NMP boards?
Yes, prime with one coat of SBR, leave to dry. Once dry put on another coat of SBR and plaster over while still tacky to touch.
Do I need to prime NMP with SBR?
You must prime NMP with SBR if...
-
it is a wet area, or
-
you are installing it on to concrete (prime both sides), or
-
you are using the NMP with underfloor heating.
Remember, priming will provide a better bond between the tile adhesive and the boards. It will also give a waterproof coating and help transfer the heat of your underfloor heating.
Why do I need to prime both sides when NMP is going onto concrete?
Applying adhesive firstly to the under-side then to the top-side of the board creates a short-term moisture imbalance which sometimes causes the boards to curl at the edges. This will not happen if the boards are primed with SBR Primer on both sides.
Why do I need to prime the NMP boards when using them with underfloor heating?
Tests have shown that priming with SBR Primer helps to reflect the heat of the underfloor heating and therefore increase its efficiency.
What is the loadbearing capacity of NMP?
The vertical loading is about 60kg/m2
Questions about Kaskade wetroom kits
Why should I choose Kaskade?
Using a Kaskade shower tray is a simple and hassle free route to your ideal shower area. They are simple to install and are designed to be used in conjunction with the NMP backer boards for a step-free wet room. Wehn fitted in accordance with the manufacturers' recommendations they are guaranteed for 25 years.
How much does a Kaskade tray weigh?
The tray weighs approximately 6kg,
Does the Kascade shower tray need supporting between the joists when using in a tiled application?
“The Kaskade shower trays do not need to be supported between joists in normal circumstances” i.e. unless the joists are much wider spaced than usual .
How thick is the tray?
The tray is 22mm up to the rebate. The rebate is 6mm high to accept the No More Ply.
What is the Kaskade tray made form?
It is made from reinforced fibreglass.
How do I fix the tray in place?
The tray should be fixed into position with Mega Strength adhesive and then screwed in place.
What adhesive do you recommend to use when installing tiles on top of the Kaskade tray?
We would highly recommend that you use Megalastic adhesive when tiling on top of the Kaskade tray.
Can I install a Kaskade tray into concrete?
Yes, you will need to dig out the dimension of the tray plus an extra 100mm each side. Set the trap into position and lay self levelling concrete to bring it up to 32mm below the final surface. For full details please see page 24 on the 'What is a wetroom?' help sheet.
Will I need to order anything extra if I am installing on to concrete?
Yes, you will require the fixing anchors which come in the concrete fixing kit.
What will I need to do when installing on to new concrete block and beam?
Cover the block & beam floor with insulation board (Beavaboard) and set the trap into the insulation board, then follow the procedure for installing onto a concrete floor -you'll need the concrete fixing kit for this.
What is the Fall on the the tray?
The fall on the tray is about 1:50. If the shower tray is located underneath the shower head this will provide sufficient flow for a powerful shower. The rest of the floor can be sealed with No More Ply and will only receive minimal splash.
Can I cut down the Kaskade tray?
Yes, you may cut off up to 100mm of any side but do bear in mind the fall when tiling the reduced side and that you will cut away the rebate for the No More Ply. The cut edges should be positioned against a wall rather than into the main room, and the tray will need to be sealed with Mega Strength adhesive.
I am looking to do a 1.5m by 2m wet room. Do you do a kit of this size?
Yes the 3m2 Kaskade wet room kit would be ideal.
What do I do if I have a larger wetroom to do?
As you will see, our wetroom kits come in various sizes; the best thing is to select the kit nearest to the size of your room and then contact us to discuss what extra items you require to supplement the main kit and ensure you have all you need.
What is the height of the grate that we tile up to?
The standard size is 6mm but you can increase it to 12mm high using the extension piece provided in the pack. Further extension pieces can be ordered online if needs be; these are 6mm high.
What is the traps capacity?
The traps capacity is 40L per minute -sufficient for a good power shower.
What size pipe is the outlet?
The size of the outlet pipe is 50mm.
How much space does the trap take up under the floorboards?
The trap take up 80mm of space under the floorboards. A vertical outlet is also available; just prefix the order code with a 'v'.
How much space does the trap take up under the tray?
The trap sits 89mm below the tray at its lowest point.
Can the trap be accessed once installed?
Yes, the trap can be accessed easily from the top for easy maintenance.
Can I fit a Kaskade tray on top of a timber floorboard floor?
Yes, cut the floorboards to the size of the tray. You will require extra noggins (small pieces of wood) around the trap to provide extra support for it.
Why can't we form our own tray with a screed?
Firstly, to create the correct & equal falls whilst maintaining the level is very difficult and time consuming. The screed has to be left to cure for a few days too so the Kaskade tray saves time and hassle. Secondly, it requires a surprising amount of screed to create a satisfactory job and the screed needs to be waterproofed using expensive sealants so the Kaskade tray often works out cheaper. Finally, should the screed fail in any way during use, the screed-formed shower tray will inevitably leak and repairs are notoriously difficult and disruptive. In contrast, a properly fitted Kaskade tray has a 25 year guarantee.
