Grout Calculator Instructions
Buying the right amount of grout is essential to your project - you want to buy enough to get the job done but don't want to be wasting money on grout that isn't going to get used.
To use our simple calculator to determine the correct amount of grout for your project you need just five important dimensions:
The width of the tile in millimetres (A)
A mosaic tile may have a width of approximately 25mm, a large floor tile may be 300mm. If you don't already know this figure it can be determined easily using a ruler.
The length of the tile in millimetres (B)
If your tile is square this will be the same as the figure above
The thickness of the tile in millimetres (C)
For a standard wall tile this will be around 6mm to 8mm. A large stone tile may be more like 10mm to 15mm thick. This figure will be tricky to determine accurately using a simple ruler. Please refer to your manufacturers notes.
The grout spacing in millimetres (D)
This can be as small as 3mm for wall tiles or as much as 10mm for large floor tiles. Generally you can take this figure from the tile spacers you are using in your project.
Total area in square metres
The total amount of wall of floor space you intend to cover with your tiles. This is easily calculated by determining multiplying the various lengths and breadths of the surfaces to be tiled.
Once you have filled all the fields click the "Calculate" button to see how much grout you will need based on the figures you have provided. If you need to start again just click the "Reset" button and all fields will be reset to blanks.
Tips
If you have a complicated area to tile you should draw a quick sketch of the area and divide it into rectangles. The area of each rectangle can then be determined accurately. Adding these figures together will give you your total area.
If you are varying your tiling pattern, for example mixing tile sizes or, using different grout spaces in different area you should work through the calculation separately for each variation in your scheme and add the resulting figures. Tile size and grout spacing can have a significant affect on grout usage.
Your results
You are given three results all of which are in kilogrammes:
The first figure is the result of the actual calculation rounded off to two decimal places.
The second figure is the amount of grout required rounded up to the nearest kilogramme.
The third figure (in bold) is the amount of grout required, to the nearest kilogramme, including at least a 10% margin for error.
Important notes
Please make sure, when you are entering your figures, that you only use numbers and decimal points.
The "+10%" figure is calculated independently and not based on the previously rounded-up calculation. This way it should not erroneously bias your calculations.Following the previous example, if you need 12.2kg of grout for your project, 10% allowance for errors would come to 13.42kg. Consequently you will be shown a figure of 14kg.
